Surfing

SurfingI've seen this guy 'surfing' down the River Itchen a couple of times now.

I'll bet it's not as easy to do as he makes it look.

I suspect I'd end up in the drink the first boat that goes past me.

This does look fun though.

  1. He looks like he is fairly brave seeing as it doesn't look like he is wearing any kind of floatation device. What is he doing standing on the board and paddling it downstream or is there enough current that he is actually surfing?

It looks like he could be wearing a drysuit, which gives you some flotation. Although, y'know, people don't actually sink like a stone the moment they're immersed in water - some of us can swim. He's attached to his board, so he can climb back onto it quickly enough, and if not there are enough ladders and slipways etc down that stretch of the Itchen to be able to get ashore fairly soon.

There aren't any waves to surf on, but on the ebb tide there's certainly enough current to take you downstream at a reasonable pace. Plays merry hell with trying to get back onto my pontoon just upriver of Lady Jane :-)

  5. Hi Rob

I can, and will happily do so for you, but it's maybe best to get your own programmer. Especially if you are developing something.

    I use a Pickit2 and it's quite easy.

I'd love to have the tour :-)

We've exchanged waves a few times as I pass by, but it usually tends to be when I'm on the way back and I have to get alongside before the water disappears - my boat sits on the mud at low tide.

  9. Thanks for the offer Tim, if I get stuck I might take you up on it ( thats not to say that theres anything wrong with your doing it for me! I would love you too, but I guess I have to learn sometime) I have five of the same chips to programme the same? I also have my own programmer coming through Ebay from Tailamd (eventually) :o((
    Tkamks again
    Regards
