Mini generator

Mini GeneratorThe 24V mini generator project has been stalled somewhat.

Before Christmas, Andy and I set to making the frame you see for the engine and alternator combo.

Fact is, we were eventually frozen off the deck, with it being too cold to even think straight while working.

The new workshop space was no help as the diesel generator in there, needed for the welding, was stinking the place out with fumes.

Once the weather improves, this will get done.

I know the engine and alternator can only produce 25 or so amps at most, but this will be perfect for my needs.

This is intended solely as a battery charger, and not a direct power source for anything else, which is mostly what my big generator does nowadays anyway.

Oh yes, and I'm intending that the waste heat is also used to help heat the boat, if I reasonably can that is.

    This may be a dumb question.

    How are you getting fumes in the workshop from your generator ?

    My diesel generator in my boat does not give off fumes.

    I didn't really explain properly, but the exhaust fumes blow back into the workshop.

    I've not got round to fixing the exhaust up any better as it's not really been an issue before then.

    That alternator wants to spin at 7,000 RPM? According to the specs on your Honda motor, 6,000 to 8,000 RPM is going to be the sweet spot. Maybe a 2:1 reduction would be wanted.

  6. Be wary of cooling the exhaust too quickly as acids ( from condensation) can find their way back into the engine or at the least prematurely rot out the exhaust itself.IMHO :o))

    I wanted to see if controlling the engine speed electronically, to match the amps I want/need would work.

    My thinking being, lower revs means even less fuel.

    That way, I don't have the thing screaming at 7000 rpm all the time.

    What I was thinking was some kind of soundproof housing for the whole thing.

    The air circulating through the housing using a small DC fan would then provide the hot air source.

    We are talking less than 1KW power output here, so it's not really that much heat.

    I see the heat from cooing the whole engine/alternator combination being used, rather than just the heat from the exhaust.

    The exhaust diameter is very tiny, so I'm thinking I'll probably use a length of say 1 inch steel pipe to outside for this.

    I suspect the pipe will not be that hot by the time the gas is vented outside anyway.

    This is all experimental, and fun learning :)

    No matter what the source, when using engine heat, be sure to install a carbon monoxide detector in the area heated.

    Absolutely!

    In fact, as part of another project I'm working on CO, smoke, bilge level and gas detection installed where appropriate and all networked together.

  14. Have a look at an Eberspacher exhaust, they manage to take a hot exhaust through plastic boat hulls without burning them and I have made my own in the past to their design well not actually their design but a similar one. :o))
