Exhaust stack

Exhaust stackHere I add my little bit to the environment, stinking out the posh yachts at the marina there.

No need to go mad - this was taken just after the main engine was started. Once the engine has warmed up a bit, the smoke soon disappears.

I know this means worn stuff in the engine, valve guides and the like, but it's pretty much always been like that so I'm not worrying about it too much.

I've often wondered why the stack is set at that rakish angle.

The best reason I can come up with is so anyone climbing that small ladder to the wheelhouse roof does not get a face full of hot smoke.

I wouldnt worry too much about the smoke either I rebuilt an old volvo earthmoover engine ( new pistons liners regrind to crank re-needled and ajusted injectors and calibrated and rebuilt diesel pump the lot) and when we started it it smoke exactly the same, so my conclusion is that diesel engines of that age were designed to smoke! least-ways not a lot of thought was put into the design for the enviroment also how many 1930 design 1950 aged engines do you know that dont smoke not many I bet:o)) J,M,H,O, you understhad

  2. I noticed the wind turbine isn't on its perch yet. Is it still working away on the fore deck just fine?

  3. Oh, they won't like smoke over their nice shiney plastic decks over in the marina, it might get in their gin and tonics !!!!!! :)

    White smoke is normal for a cold diesel. It just means the compression is low and gets higher as the engine warms up.

    Mine smoke like crazy unless I have the block heaters on.

    They also start faster with the heaters on and no smoke.

    only 400 hours on the motor! once warmed up its virtually clear

  6. Hey TZ! Down here in the Caribbean, Soren, ( our Industrie Diesel) does not smoke at all on start up. When we are up in the cold north then we too have a white smoke for the first hour or so...totally normal my friend. Wish you were here....awesome it is!     The wind turbine is still held steady with only a piece of rope.

    I'm hoping to get a better, bore permanent, solution from the manufacturers.

    In the meantime, it's working just fine.

    On a still day I'm overjoyed to discover that my generator blows perfect smoke rings through its new exhaust when I turn it over. runs clear right after that tho.

    I reckon most all diesels smoke a bit on starting, nowt to worry about..

Regarding the exhaust stack , I was told by the Scottish skippers that the reason it points to one side is that when trawling the boats always go a certain direction and that in the early days of diesel they could ship seawater down the exhaust and kill the engine with fatal consequences ,so it was set away from windward to prevent this happening.
