Predator 130

Predator 130Late on Friday night this beauty cruised by me on the River Itchen.

Sorry about the rather dark picture.

To give you an idea of it's size, it's bridge is as high as Lady Jane's wheelhouse. Something I don't think I've seen on any other yacht around here.

I believe its one of the new Predator 130's from Sunseeker, being launched at the Southampton boat show which started on Friday.

Now there's some serious money.

They claim it can do 35 kts -- with a little over 8,000 HP of 16 cylinder diesel motors burning nearly two cubic metres of fuel per hour. Lucky thing the tanks hold 20 cubic metres of fuel.

  2. Not my cup of tea I'm afraid...I can only get excited about old tubs full of rusting rivets ;) I'm very curious to know what your Lady Jane actually is, Tim. I've had a look at your Flickr site, but nowhere yet have I seen a photo that tells me what sort of craft she is. Is she a trawler? Excuse my ignorance, but I really don't know. You've mentioned a fish hold somewhere, I know. She's very big, isn't she? I take my hat off to you for undertaking such a project, I really do. By the way, the Wendy Ann looks like a lovely Tug!

  3. Pish, I've just seen your profile blurb...what a dummy I am! She is a trawler...forget my question, but I would like to see more, larger photos of the whole ship. Could you tell me where to find them on your flickr site?

  4. "Beauty"?

    Not in my book.

Sail is my thing really, but I can respect a proper motor ship like Lady Jane too. Those over-inflated tupperware behemoths though - no. They even manage to *look* rude, aggressive, and inconsiderate.

  5. Hi anonymous

Any pleasure boat with fuel consumption quoted in cubic metres per hour surely has to be cause for concern.

  7. Hi Pete

I think the bigger boats like these are more likely have some kind of professional crew on board, so should display more situational awareness.

    Just my opinion of course.

Well, it is the MTU engine's specs that give consumption at about 900 litres per hour, each.

  9. Hi anonymous

To put things in perspective here, just over one hour's burn time in that puppy equates to roughly one years mileage in my truck!

  10. Hi Tim - I agree that something this size will have a professional seafarer in charge, and so is unlikely to actually *be* aggressive and inconsiderate. Nevertheless, many of them are designed to look it, appealing to a kind of crude "I can beat you" mentality. It's ugly to see.
